Retirement: income, care and choices

Retirement is not one savings number. Start with the life you want to support, the income already expected and the gap that remains.

Start with spending, not a promised return

Separate basic living costs, healthcare, debt commitments and flexible enjoyment. Some costs may fall when work ends; others may rise. Estimate pensions from confirmed records and official terms, not from a guess based on another person's benefit.

A starting income-gap example

Fictional household example. Spending and pension are both expressed in today’s pesos for this first comparison, not as an official pension quotation.

Dina’s first retirement-income question: what funds the gap?
Monthly need / resourceAmount
Living costs₱30,000
Healthcare / routine care provision₱5,000
Travel / enjoyment₱5,000
Total spending₱40,000
Expected pension in this example₱20,000
Initial monthly gap₱20,000

If retirement is 20 years away and spending rises by a hypothetical 3% annually, ₱40,000 becomes about ₱72,244 per month at retirement. If the pension stays at ₱20,000 in nominal pesos, the first monthly gap is about ₱52,244. If an actual pension has a different start date or adjustment, use those terms. Do not subtract a present-value pension from future spending without stating how each was projected.

Include time and healthcare

A 30-year retirement is one scenario to examine, not a prediction of lifespan. More years, healthcare shocks, low returns or an early market decline can require more resources. A fixed withdrawal percentage is not a guaranteed lifetime pension.

Check which healthcare benefits continue after employment, what your existing plans actually provide and which costs remain yours. Keep near-term spending accessible rather than making every peso depend on long-term growth.
