Investing with a purpose

Aral muna bago invest. Give each part of your money a job, then understand the risks that come with the tools you choose.

Separate time horizons

Emergency cash and a payment due next year have a different job from a flexible goal decades away. A higher expected return can come with larger losses or poor timing. Before investing, know when you need the money and how a temporary or permanent loss would affect that need.

Two fictional situations

Jo has ₱100,000 reserved for an expense due in 12 months. A 20% decline would leave ₱80,000 before charges: a ₱20,000 shortfall at the wrong time. She compares capital risk, withdrawal timing and charges instead of choosing only the highest advertised return.

Alex has a separate emergency reserve and a flexible 15-year goal. For a teaching example, suppose a long-term portfolio has 60% diversified equities and 40% bonds. This is not a model portfolio recommendation. If equities fall 20% and bonds are unchanged over an illustrated period, a ₱100,000 portfolio becomes ₱88,000 before fees: ₱60,000 × 0.8 + ₱40,000. Bonds can also fall; this example is not a worst-case limit.

Diversification is more than owning several names

Asset allocation divides money among types of assets. Diversification also considers holdings within those types. Two funds with similar holdings may provide less variety than their different names suggest. It reduces some concentration risk; it does not eliminate loss.

Contributions and costs matter

₱3,000 at the end of each month for ten years is ₱360,000 of contributions. At a hypothetical 4% effective annual net return, converted to an equivalent monthly rate, it grows to about ₱440,088. This smooth-growth comparison excludes variable markets; “net” assumes costs and taxes have already been allowed for. An actual return may be lower or negative.

Ask about purchase charges, recurring expenses, redemption costs and tax treatment. Review allocation as the goal approaches; the right mix is a question about needs and risk capacity, not just age.
