Start with essential expenses
Write down housing, food, utilities, essential transport and family care. Add debt commitments and other unavoidable costs when choosing the reserve you actually need. The assessment's “months” indicator uses essential living expenses only; it is a starting measure, not a complete target.
A starter reserve helps with a smaller disruption. A fuller target may cover several months. Three, six or more months are planning options, not a rule that makes every household safe. Variable income, one income earner, dependents, benefit limits or a slow route back to work can call for a larger buffer.
Same habit, different timelines
Fictional household example. No growth, fees or withdrawals; contributions are monthly. Timelines round up to a full contribution month.
| Household | Essentials | Existing savings | Selected target | Monthly contribution | Time to target |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ana: stable income | ₱20,000 | ₱10,000 | 3 months = ₱60,000 | ₱5,000 | 10 months |
| Nico: variable income | ₱30,000 | ₱20,000 | 6 months = ₱180,000 | ₱4,000 | 40 months |
Ana's gap is ₱50,000. Nico's is ₱160,000. Nico first aims for a ₱30,000 starter reserve: a ₱10,000 gap, reached in three months at ₱4,000 per month. He can then continue toward the full target. A distant target does not make the first deposit pointless.
Availability matters more than an exciting return
Keep the emergency portion where you understand access, withdrawal timing, charges and potential losses. An investment you must sell after a market decline may be available on paper but unsuitable for an urgent expense. Check the actual account or fund terms; do not assume every “liquid” product pays out immediately.
Agree on use and refill rules
- Use it for an urgent necessary expense or income interruption, not an ordinary planned purchase.
- Known school fees, maintenance and holidays belong in separate provisions.
- After using it, record the remaining balance and restart contributions.
- Review the target when dependents, work or essential costs change.
Emergency savings are one layer of a Solid Financial Foundation. They complement protection and healthcare resources; they do not automatically replace them.
