Healthcare today—and later

Good coverage today is valuable. The next question is what it pays for, what you must provide yourself, and what happens when your work or life changes.

Look at the layers you already have

List employer benefits, personal coverage, PhilHealth, accessible savings and other confirmed resources. For each, check eligibility, accredited providers, limits, exclusions, waiting conditions and the process for getting care. A benefit amount is not automatically a promise to pay every bill.

Short-term healthcare is optimized for short-term use. Long-term healthcare is optimized for long-term healthcare. Their roles can complement each other: access to care now, and resources for needs that may arise after employer benefits change. The details of a particular plan still matter.

A simple gap example

Fictional household example. The benefit payment below is assumed eligible and confirmed solely for illustration; no actual insurer or plan is represented.

Lena checks both benefit eligibility and accessible resources
Resource / needIllustrated amount
Eligible hospital bill₱150,000
Confirmed benefit payable for this bill₱100,000
Uncovered amount₱50,000
Accessible healthcare cash available₱30,000
Remaining cash gap₱20,000

Lena does not subtract a second benefit unless coordination with the first has been confirmed. The same bill cannot simply be assumed reimbursable twice. Her employer coverage also needs a separate review if she changes jobs or retires.

Prepare for transitions

Healthcare must not be delayed merely to preserve a projected future fund. Use it when you need it. Comparing resources beforehand can help you understand the consequence of each choice, including benefit-use conditions on a particular product.

Explore a long-term example after the basics

The Kaiser Journey illustrates how preparation and benefit use can affect a long-term healthcare plan. Read its scenario assumptions and current contract conditions; a historical or hypothetical value is not a guarantee for your own plan.
