Life stage 2

Building a Family

You're building more than your own future now.

Young Filipino family drawing together at home.

Life changes when other people begin depending on you.

There's food, housing and healthcare. Maybe there's a home to pay for. Maybe you're beginning to think about school, family experiences and the opportunities you want your children to have.

Your financial decisions aren't only about you anymore. You're building a family's future. And that changes what needs protecting.

Protect the family—and the dreams

When children are young, much of their future is still unfinished.

There may be 10, 15 or 20 years of food, housing, education and everyday family life ahead. There may also be dreams: college, a better home, travel together, a family business, opportunities you want your children to have.

So one uncomfortable but useful financial-planning question is: If my income stopped permanently tomorrow, which of our family's plans could still continue?

Protection isn't simply about leaving money behind. It's about helping the people you love continue the life and future you're building together.

Build the dream. Protect the dream.

Suppose you're preparing for your child's education. There are really two jobs.

The first is to build the education fund. The second is to ask what happens to that goal if the person funding it is no longer there.

The same applies to a home, a business or other important family goals.

The younger your children are, the more years of their future may still depend on you. That's why family protection can be particularly important at this stage.

You're not just protecting people. You're protecting unfinished dreams.

Keep saving—even when family expenses grow

This is also the stage when expenses have an annoying habit of multiplying.

Food costs more. Children grow out of clothes. School expenses appear. There are birthdays, family trips, repairs and things nobody remembered to put in the budget.

It's easy for saving to become: Whatever is left at the end of the month. Unfortunately, there often isn't much left.

Try to keep some money moving regularly toward emergencies, future goals, investments and retirement.

You don't have to make family life miserable in order to prepare for the future. The goal is to enjoy your family today without sacrificing every tomorrow to pay for today.

An emergency fund now protects more than you

When you were single, a financial emergency mostly affected you. With a family, the same emergency can affect several people.

What happens if you're unable to work for several months? Or someone is hospitalized? Or there's a serious accident, fire or business interruption?

Without emergency resources, a temporary problem can quickly become debt—or somebody else's financial emergency. Emergency savings create breathing room.

Healthcare has two timelines

It's useful to ask two different questions.

What protects us today? You may have an employer HMO, government benefits, personal healthcare coverage or emergency savings.

But there's another question: What happens later?

Will today's healthcare protection still be available if you change jobs? When you're older? When you retire?

Healthcare matters throughout life. The form of protection may change, but the need doesn't simply disappear.

Don't forget your own retirement

Parents naturally put their children first. Sometimes everything gets put first.

School. The house. Family needs. College. Then retirement gets whatever time and money remain.

The problem is that you can borrow for some goals. You cannot borrow another 20 years of compounding.

Your children's education and your retirement are both future goals.

And one of the best gifts you can eventually give your adult children is being able to say: We're okay. You don't have to support us.

At this stage, think about:

Family protection • Emergency savings • Healthcare • Education and family goals • Debt • Saving and investing • Retirement

You have people and dreams to protect.
